III. Stem-changing verbs in the preterite
We will learn about verbs that stem-change in the preterite. Take out a piece of paper to take notes.
In the present tense, there are three types of stem-changing verbs: o-ue, e-ie, and e-i. -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs can all stem-change. Here is an example of a stem-changing verb in the present tense:

- Open the assignment called "U4 Writing and Listening Comprehension" and open the document.
- Read and follow the instructions. Click "Turn In" when you finish.

Stem-changing verbs in the preterite are a little different from stem-changing verbs in the present.
Stem-changing verbs use the same endings as regular verbs in the preterite.
The following slideshow will give examples of stem-changing verbs as well as verbs that have a spelling change in the preterite:
- -IR verbs that stem-change in the present tense are the only verbs that stem-change in the preterite.
- -AR and -ER verbs do NOT stem-change.
- Vowels change from o-u or from e-i.
- Verbs only stem-change in the él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms.

When you are done with the Writing and Listening Comprehension, turn it in to Google Classroom. Then, go to Quizlet and study the unit 3 vocabulary. Focus on the Learn and Speller activities.
V. Conjuguemos
Practice conjugating stem-changing verbs in the preterite. Note: Some of the verbs in the activity have a spelling change instead of a stem-change. -ER and -IR verbs that have a vowel before the ending (ex. leer) change from an i to a y in the él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms. Example: Él leyó.
Conjugate the following verbs in the preterite in your notes:
1. entender 3. vestirse
2. preferir 4. cerrar

- Click the box that says "Don't Time Me" and click Start
- Conjugate at least 50 verbs with 90% accuracy or better. You can do this in two groups of 25 verbs.
- Click "Record/Send Results" when you finish.
