II. Verbos irregulares del pretérito
Today we will learn how to conjugate irregular verbs in the preterite that share common endings. They also use completely different stems in the preterite.
First, let's look over the regular preterite endings. To conjugate regular verbs in the preterite, all you do is remove the infinitive ending and add the preterite ending.
Regular preterite endings
-ar endings -er/-ir endings
é í
aste iste
ó ió
amos imos
asteis isteis
aron ieron
With these irregular verbs, you will use a completely different stem and use the following irregular endings:
Irregular endings
Yo: -e
Tú: -iste
Él/ella/ud.: -o
Nosotros: -imos
Vosotros: -isteis
Ellos/ellas/ustedes: -ieron (-eron before a j)
**Notice: there are no accents**
The most common verbs that use these endings are below. The column on the left lists the verbs in their infinitive forms. The second column shows the irregular stems they use in the preterite.
Haber: hubo, hubieron (there was; there were)
