II. Stem-changing verbs
Take out a piece of paper. We'll be taking notes on stem-changing verbs.
Some verbs are stem-changing verbs. When you conjugate a stem-changing verb, you will change a vowel in the stem of the verb and change the ending.
There are three types of stem-changing verbs:
The vowel that changes is the vowel closest to the ending of a verb:
Jugar (u-ue) to play *this is the only u-ue verb*
Yo juego Nosotros jugamos
Tú juegas Vosotros jugáis
Él juega Ellas juegan
Stem-changing verbs are sometimes called "shoe verbs" because of the shape you can draw around the conjugated verbs; nosotros and vosotros don't stem-change, so they aren't included in the shape.
Write the following vocabulary words in Spanish:
- The subway station
- To go camping
- To go shopping
- To go fishing
- To be on vacation
II. Stem-changing verbs
Take out a piece of paper. We'll be taking notes on stem-changing verbs.
- To conjugate a regular verb, you just remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, or -ir) and add a new present tense ending.
Some verbs are stem-changing verbs. When you conjugate a stem-changing verb, you will change a vowel in the stem of the verb and change the ending.
- the stem is the part before the ending.
- Example: in the verb hablar, the stem is habl-, and the ending is -ar
There are three types of stem-changing verbs:
- O to UE (these can be -ar, -er, or -ir verbs)
- E to IE (these can be -ar, -er, or -ir verbs)
- E to I (*these are only -ir verbs)
The vowel that changes is the vowel closest to the ending of a verb:
- In the verb entender, the second e stem-changes to ie
Jugar (u-ue) to play *this is the only u-ue verb*
Yo juego Nosotros jugamos
Tú juegas Vosotros jugáis
Él juega Ellas juegan
Stem-changing verbs are sometimes called "shoe verbs" because of the shape you can draw around the conjugated verbs; nosotros and vosotros don't stem-change, so they aren't included in the shape.
- Here are some examples of E--IE stem-changing verbs:
Práctica: You will now practice conjugating stem-changing verbs on your own. Conjugate the following verbs on a piece of paper in Spanish with the English definitions (ex. Hablo; I talk).

We will review vocabulary with El Conejito Malo again.
- We will have two teams.
- Each student will have a whiteboard, a marker, and a tissue.
- Only use the markers to write your answers; don't use them to draw because this uses up the ink.
- I will project a picture with a vocabulary term in English.
- Teams will take turns. On your team's turn, everyone will write an answer on their whiteboard. Do not share answers or use any notes.
- When I tell you to, hold up your whiteboards. Your team will get a point for every correct answers. Spelling counts!
- If you have at least 7 points, your team can bank your points. This keeps them safe for the rest of the game.
- If everyone on a team gets the answer wrong, the other team has a chance to steal the slide.
- If a team sees a picture of a rabbit, they lose all of their unbanked points. The team with the most points at the end wins.
